Edit summary: →In mammals: Van Cauter et al. (2020) examined on 149 healthy men aged 16 to 83 years old. This study found that REM sleep remained stable from early adulthood until middle aged. However, will decline after aged 50. Van went on the say that REM sleep would decrease by 10 minutes fer ten years. At old age, lower REM sleep also associated to increase higher level of cortical hormone release. Study noted that reducing REM sleep in older adults will increase stress levels and sleep homeostasis.
